The First Step towards Positive Change
Outreach & Drop-In Services
Street Outreach has been a vital component of Covenant House’s work since its inception in 1972. With a vision of “no youth on the streets,” the Outreach Team operates a van covering all five boroughs and target areas where young homeless or at-risk people are likely to congregate. They offer food, clothing, access to shelter and other needed social services. Through this service, Covenant House builds positive relationships with youth who are living on the streets and at risk of becoming exploited. The Outreach staff transports young people to our Youth Shelter, refers them to other resource centers, and provides other immediate services.
Covenant House’s Drop-In Center provides a safe, supportive and normalizing environment for youths labeled "homeless or at-risk". The Drop-In Center provides an atmosphere of acceptance where individuals feel needed and grow in self-worth, dignity and self-respect. They provide support, resources and referrals to youth who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. The Drop-In Center also provides aftercare services to those young people who have previously received services in our Youth Shelter and Rights of Passage Program. The goal of the Drop-In Center is to increase young people’s knowledge of community resources and provide on-going services as needed.
