Welcome Center & Youth Shelter

Much More than Just a Shelter

Welcome Center & Youth Shelter

Covenant House New York’s Welcome Center and Youth Shelter is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to serve homeless young people.  Our Welcome Center and Youth Shelter team works to lovingly and immediately meet the basic needs of our youth, with a compassionate welcome, a hearty meal, a shower, a fresh set of clothes, and a warm and safe place to sleep. Once a young person has his or her basic needs being addressed, our team assists them in developing a personal plan, and then in making progress towards their health, employment, education and other identified goals.  The ultimate objective for all of our young people is to help them transition into safe, stable, loving places, which almost always includes a permanent living situation.

At the heart of our work is the principle of “Open Intake”.  In 1977, CHNY was among the first to establish an Open Intake youth shelter for homeless youth.  Indeed, we strive to turn away no young person in need and, accordingly, do our best to ensure resources so no one is forced to spend a night on the streets.  As a result of this priority, CHNY has grown into the largest provider of shelter for homeless youth in New York City and the country.

Mother and Child Center

The Mother and Child Center helps homeless young mothers secure a brighter and more stable future for themselves and their children. The Center provides a full range of programs that include immediate shelter and care to help stabilize their situations; comprehensive health care for moms and babies in our full service Health Center; free day care and nursery services; and a full range of educational, vocational, and job placement services.  The Center also provides counseling and education aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect, and parenting workshops to help our young mothers develop positive parenting skills.
