On Friday, April 29, 130 New York and New Jersey women participated in Covenant House’s Sleep Out: Mothers Edition at the 41st CHNY shelter. The women slept out in solidarity with homeless youth, raising over $484,000 through their advocacy and fundraising efforts. The evening included 12 youth from CHNY and CHNJ speaking in small groups with our participants, giving attendees a chance to get to know our young people and our work. Two Covenant House youth shared their stories, while another performed an acapella version of "Rise Up" during a candlelit ceremony in commemoration of the young people we serve and those who have yet to find their way to us. Finally, a Covenant House youth alumni returned to share her story 20 years later. She updated the group on her recent successes - graduating with an associates degree and her plan to return to school this fall for her bachelors degree. Now a mother of three, she returned to Covenant House to be a part of the Sleep Out movement and joined the other 129 women to bring hope to our young people.
The sleepers took to the driveway outside of the shelter with just a cardboard box, sleeping bag and plastic bag and concluded their experience with a morning reflection and breakfast.
We are so grateful to these women and applaud them for exemplifying the power of a woman's love and their united efforts.
