MI & The Annie E. Casey Foundation

We were honored to be featured on The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s blog post earlier this month in an article about Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing (MI), an evidence-based practice that promotes empathetic conversations, helps young people experiencing homelessness by pinpointing their motivations to make change. MI has been shown particularly effective for individuals dealing with depression, anxiety or other mental health issues.

With funding from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, we’ve partnered with mental health technology startup Lyssn to train staff in MI, helping the young people we serve embrace change and achieve their dreams. We are so grateful for partners like Lyssn and the Annie E. Casey Foundation — it takes a village to do the work that needs to be done to support young people experiencing homelessness.

Laurie Berarducci Honored in 40 Under 40

We are so excited that our Director of Data Systems, Laurie Berarducci, has been honored as part of New York Nonprofit Media’s 40 Under 40! 🎉

Laurie is a valued member of CHNY’s Program Compliance and Performance Measurement (PCPM) team. They use a performance manage system that allows us to track and report on our level of impact, make data-informed decisions and maximize program performance.

Laurie is one of many people who work behind the scenes to help keep our doors open: she currently maintains our case-management system (which she helped build!), contributes to internal communications, monitors almost all of CHNY’s data, and contributes to program evaluation. Her work is critical to ensure that we can better serve young people — and ensure that we can systemically track, monitor, and measure success.

We’re so grateful for the hard work she contributes to CHNY and our mission to #EndYouthHomelessness — thank you, Laurie! You deserve this award, and we appreciate you.

Our Newest Site is Open in the Bronx!

We’re thrilled to announce that our newest site, a shelter for female-identifying youth ages 21-24, is now officially open in the Bronx! We are so excited to start welcoming young people experiencing homelessness to this beautiful space.

The grand opening of this new shelter has been nearly two years in the making! So many people worked tirelessly to make it happen, and we couldn’t have opened the site without the hard work of countless CHNY staff. We’re so grateful for all of their hard work to make our new Bronx site feel as safe and welcoming as possible for up to 20 young women.

This new shelter was made possible by a new and unique funding opportunity through New York City’s Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). The site will help address the need for shelter and services for young people who have “aged out” of other DYCD-funded programs once they turn 21. We’re thrilled that our new site can provide housing for this demographic of young people on their way to independence.

We had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, March 12 to celebrate and are so excited to welcome young people experiencing homelessness into this brand new space. We had balloons, cake, and other delicious snacks and refreshments for staff and youth to make the move into their new home extra special. Check out the photos of the opening day!

New Building Progress!

As you may already know, we’re in the middle of renovating our site to make a brand new and improved Covenant House New York! We moved three buildings into one, and tore down two of the buildings to make our new comprehensive, youth-centered shelter.

The building will be completed in 2021 and we’re so excited that the foundation has been laid and the framework is up; it’s hard to believe that despite all of the setbacks COVID-19 has brought, the building progress continues. We’re thrilled to share some updated photos of the construction with you — check them out below!

CHNY and COVID-19

Dear Covenant House New York Community,

We would like to express our sincere concern for and solidarity with all communities affected by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. We at Covenant House New York are grateful for the thoughtful responses of our government and community partners, as well as our local leaders, in trying to contain this outbreak.

Many organizations in the community have made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend their operations. At Covenant House New York, we remain committed to keeping our doors open 24 hours a day — our youth rely on us to be a beacon of hope and safety — and we are rising to meet this challenge.

We have put a number of measures in place to keep youth and staff safe in all of our programs: increased cleaning measures, social distancing, and closely monitoring youth if and when they present symptoms. We have staggered our staff schedules to minimize risk, while continuing to provide the same high-quality services to youth. This includes innovative new ways to provide programming using remote technologies. We continue to monitor the situation and are prepared to follow directives set forth by city and state government.

We know that this is a time of heightened anxiety for all of us, as we are facing an unprecedented situation that impacts the entire world. It is paramount, however, that we still consider the unique and heightened needs of youth experiencing homelessness at this time. The youth who reside at Covenant House have nowhere else to go. We are their home. And we will continue to be their home during this crisis.

Most importantly, we want to thank you for your continued support of our young people, and hope you will keep fighting for them every step of the way, especially in this time of great uncertainty. Please consider making a donation by clicking ‘Donate’ at the top of our website.

Together, in spite of this worldwide crisis, we will continue our fight to end youth homelessness.

Sincerely,

Sr. Nancy Downing
Executive Director

Croes Housewarming

On Thursday, October 10th, we celebrated our new Bronx site opening at Croes Avenue with a housewarming party! The Garden of Dreams Foundation threw an incredible celebration for the moms and their babies who will be moving into the building in the coming weeks. Family Over Everything Foundation (FOE) also attended and provided amazing diaper gift bags for our moms with tons of self-care treats inside.

Our evening began with an opening speech by CHNY Executive Director, Nancy Downing. Representatives from Garden of Dreams and FOE also spoke and offered warm welcomes to the mothers and their children before a buffet-style dinner was provided.

The moms and babies also enjoyed a playpen, various arts and crafts, and even had their portraits drawn by talented caricaturists! The evening was filled with fun and laughter.  We’re so excited for the moms in our Mother & Child program to start this new chapter in their lives, and we’re so grateful to the organizations like Garden of Dreams and FOE who help make events like this possible!

Groundbreaking 2019

We were so excited to officially break ground on the new Covenant House New York on September 19! We hosted an incredible, star-studded ceremony at the construction site, which is also our current shelter location on 41st street and 10th avenue.  Guests included CBS News’ John Dickerson, Broadway star Audra McDonald, several prominent government officials and community members, and former Covenant House youth who spoke powerfully to CHNY’s importance in providing a safe place for young people experiencing homelessness.

Covenant House International’s president, Kevin Ryan, summed up the purpose of our new building by explaining that “the new Covenant House New York will put housing support, shelter, health care, educational services, job training, and civil legal services under one roof… It will be a place where young people overcoming homelessness and human trafficking in New York City can come to build their new lives.”

Sister Nancy Downing, Executive Director for Covenant House New York, spoke to how far we’ve come as an organization and how excited we are to look toward the future: “For over four decades, young people overcoming homelessness in New York City have found safety and shelter from the streets at Covenant House,” she said. “Now, for the first time in our history, we are designing a new residential facility to address all of the specific needs of our youth, allowing us to provide robust services and coordinated care, expanding the scope of our work and the number of young people that we can serve.”

Also in attendance were several donors who have made the campaign to build a new Covenant House New York possible — including Strauss Zelnick and his wife, Wendy Belzberg. We are so grateful to the generosity of the donors that have helped us on our endeavor to raise $128 million for a purpose-built, all-inclusive shelter for young people to call home.

We’re so grateful to everyone who celebrated with us on this momentous occasion and to all the staff who made an event like this possible.  We could not have pulled off such a successful groundbreaking ceremony — and lighting up the Empire State Building (casual!) — without such dedicated members of the Covenant House Community.  Thanks for joining us in our mission to end youth homelessness!

Glebe Ave Site Open!

Earlier in August we began to slowly open our Bronx site at Glebe Avenue. This site consists of three residential floors and an administrative area in the basement, with each program having access to separate, secured entrances.

The second and third floor houses 20 single males who are part of CHNY’s R.O.P transitional living program, with the first floor providing housing for single females. This site features a kitchen, a spacious common area with large sectional couches and a T.V. as well as modern shower facilities and an elevator. There is also a laundry room available for residents.

We’re so grateful to all of the staff and funders who made opening this site possible — we’re so excited for these young people to have a fresh start in a beautiful, modern space they can call home.

Sleep Out: Stage and Screen 2019

This year’s Sleep Out: Stage and Screen was one for the books. On Monday, August 19, over 100 participants form the television, film and Broadway industries raised more than $367,000 for young people experiencing homelessness.

This sleep out took place at the Javits Center in the Hudson Yards neighborhood and began with a welcome dinner for sleepers.  Food was followed by programming, featuring video blurbs about the issue of youth homelessness and a presentation by one of our young people, Chyna, and her creative idea to run a campaign promoting self-love.  Next, participants enter break-out panel groups where they learn more about Covenant House New York, work with young people on mapping their careers based on their aspirations, or jam out with other young people in a music room.

After panels, all participants, staff, youth and volunteers came together for an incredible group sing-along to Beyoncé’s “I Was Here,” followed by our own version of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.” After the awe-inspiring performances, sleepers headed to the outdoor space at the Javits Center to sleep out for a once-in-a-lifetime experience sleeping out to end youth homelessness.  Thanks so much to everyone who participated!

Ave St. Johns is Open!

Another one of our new Bronx sites opened on Avenue St. Johns in August!  This site will serve as transitional housing as part of our R.O.P. program for mothers and children as well as single females.

The complex is essentially made of two duplexes, with moms and their children on the first two floors and single females on the third and fourth floors. Each bedroom in the single female program has between 1 and 3 twin beds and contain a free-standing, lockable closet, side table, tall mirror, and a white board for young people to keep their belongings. All bedrooms for the mother and child program accommodates a single family unit and includes a crib.

There are two full bathrooms with bathtubs on each floor, with at least one staff office on every floor and kitchenettes on the second and fourth floors of each program with a full kitchen and a common eating area.  The first and third floors feature a large living room and lounge area with a huge sectional and TV for residents to spend their down time relaxing. There is also computer lab space available for each program and a basement with washer and dryer access.

The Avenue St. Johns site is in a quiet, residential neighborhood nearby many amenities such as pediatric healthcare facilities, supermarket, daycares, and a
beautiful playground and recreation area that includes a basketball court, handball court, skate-boarding terrain, jungle gyms, sprinklers, and picnic and chess tables.

We’re so excited to welcome all of the incredible young people who moved in and are starting a new chapter in their lives with us!
